SECTION 2.
Sir J. Jordan to Sir Edward Grey.--(Received April 12.)
(No. 70.) (Telegraphic.) P.
Peking, April 12, 1910. I REGRET that I am unable to offer any further suggestions in answer to your telegram No. 57 of the 8th instant.
Mr. Aglen has accepted the post; but as regards Sir R. Bredon, nothing has been settled definitely. I have been indirectly approached as to whether His Majesty's Government's objections to Bredon's appointment to the Revenue Council would be withdrawn in exchange for a written assurance from the Chinese Government that they would never consult him on customs affairs. 1 declined to recommend this proposal to you, and Liang-tun-yen threatens, in the event of Bredon's appointment being cancelled, to tender his resignation.
With regard to the Chinese Engineering and Mining Company case, I hope that arbitration, in the event of the failure of the MeNeill negotiations, has been definitely accepted.
